Why Is My Salt Cell Not Producing Enough Chlorine?

A low chlorine test does not automatically mean the salt cell is bad. Work from the system outward: confirm the pool's free chlorine with a reliable test, read the generator status and warnings, verify salinity, make sure the pump is providing the required flow and runtime, check the output setting, inspect for scale when the manual calls for it, and consider whether sunlight, algae, rain, or heavy swimmer load is consuming chlorine faster than the cell can produce it.

Do not bypass a flow switch, open energized electrical equipment, or repeatedly acid-clean a cell to troubleshoot low chlorine. Follow the generator manual and use qualified service for electrical or internal component work.

1. Confirm that chlorine is actually low

Test the pool water rather than relying on appearance or the generator display. The generator controls production; it does not directly replace a free-chlorine test of the pool.

2. Read the generator status

Look for low-salt, low-flow, cold-water, check-cell, sensor, or other system messages. Current Pentair generators include multiple diagnostics specifically to separate water and equipment problems.

3. Verify salinity

Test salt independently and compare it with the range specified for the installed generator. Both salinity outside the operating range and an inaccurate sensor reading can prevent normal production.

4. Check pump flow and runtime

The cell only produces when the generator's operating conditions are met. A clogged filter, blocked basket, low pump speed, closed valve, air leak, or short pump schedule can reduce the hours or flow available for chlorine generation.

5. Check the output setting

A generator set to a low percentage may simply be producing less chlorine than the pool currently needs. Output percentage and pump runtime work together, so changing one changes total daily production.

6. Consider chlorine demand

Pentair lists rain, high swimmer load, environmental contamination, dirty or scaled cell blades, and cyanuric-acid conditions among causes of low or no free chlorine. Algae or heavy organic contamination can consume chlorine faster than a normally operating cell replaces it.

7. Inspect and clean only when indicated

If the generator shows a check-cell warning or inspection reveals scale, follow the exact cleaning procedure. If the warning remains after proper cleaning, the cell or sensing components may require service or replacement.

8. Know when the cell may be worn out

Electrolytic cells are consumable equipment. If salinity, flow, chemistry, runtime, output, and cleanliness are verified but the unit still cannot produce as specified, use the manufacturer's diagnostic process before ordering a replacement cell.
