How Much Salt Should Be in a Saltwater Pool?

Do not use one salt number for every pool. The correct target is the range specified by the installed salt chlorine generator. For example, Pentair's current IntelliChlor Plus/LT family lists 3,600 ppm as its ideal salt level, but another system can specify a different range. Adding too much salt is harder to undo than adding too little. Verify pool volume, current salinity, target salinity, and product purity before adding salt. Never rely only on a generator's display if the reading seems abnormal.

Step 1: Find the manufacturer's target

Read the manual or current support documentation for the installed generator. Do not use a neighbor's target or a generic internet number.

Step 2: Test salinity independently

Use a salinity test method appropriate for pools. Generator sensors can be useful, but an independent test helps prevent a sensor or calibration issue from turning into an unnecessary salt addition.

Step 3: Know the pool volume

Salt addition is a mass-balance calculation. An error in pool gallons directly changes the amount of salt the calculation recommends. Measure the pool or use the Pool Volume Calculator if the volume is uncertain.

Step 4: Calculate only the difference

Step 5: Add conservatively

Follow the salt and generator instructions for where and how to add it. Allow the salt to dissolve and circulate, then retest before deciding that more is needed.

What if the salt is already too high?

Do not add more. Pentair's current IntelliChlor Plus/LT guidance addresses high salinity by diluting pool water with fresh water until the system is back within its recommended range. Any partial drain must also account for local water restrictions, groundwater conditions, pool construction, and safe draining practices.

Why the generator can disagree with your test

Salt systems estimate salinity through sensors whose readings can be influenced by cell condition, temperature, sensor condition, or system faults. If the displayed value and an independent test differ materially, troubleshoot the system before changing the pool based on one number.
