How to Clean a Salt Cell Without Cleaning It More Than Necessary

First determine whether the cell actually needs cleaning

A low chlorine reading does not prove the cell is scaled. Check generator warnings, water flow, output setting, pump runtime, salinity, water temperature, and chemistry before assuming cleaning is the cure.

Inspect according to the manual

Power-down, plumbing isolation, cell removal, and inspection procedures vary by system. Follow the installed generator's instructions exactly before exposing the cell.

Look for mineral scale

Scale can form on cell surfaces when water balance favors calcium deposits. Current Pentair salt generators use periodic polarity reversal to reduce buildup, but hard water and unbalanced chemistry can still contribute.

Use mechanical rinsing or chemical cleaning only as directed

Some cells can be rinsed or have loose deposits removed without a strong acid treatment. When the manual calls for an acid-cleaning procedure, use the specified kit, concentration, sequence, and exposure time. More acid or a longer soak is not an upgrade.

Rinse, reassemble, and confirm operation

After the manufacturer procedure, reinstall the cell with the correct seals and orientation, restore normal flow, and verify that warnings clear and chlorine production resumes as expected.

If the warning remains after cleaning

A clean cell can still be worn or have a sensor, flow, electrical, or chemistry problem. Pentair's current Plus/LT support guidance states that a check-cell warning that remains after the prescribed cleaning can indicate worn cell blades. Troubleshoot rather than repeating acid washes.

Reduce the conditions that create scale

Manage pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, salinity, and circulation rather than treating cell cleaning as routine housekeeping. The cleanest cell is the one that does not need aggressive cleaning often.
