Salt Cell Low-Flow or No-Flow Warning: What to Check First

Pentair's current salt-cell FAQ says that when flow remains inadequate, owners should verify the pump is running at sufficient speed and check for basket debris, a clogged impeller, low pool water, suction air, valve position, a dirty filter, obstruction in the salt cell, or a faulty flow switch. Current IntelliChlor Plus/LT units also have model-specific minimum and maximum flow requirements. Start with the easy water-flow checks before ordering a sensor.

Turn the pump off and relieve system pressure before opening baskets, unions, filters, or the salt cell when the equipment manual requires it. Do not bypass a flow switch or force chlorine production without verified water flow. Electrical or internal sensor diagnosis belongs to qualified service when the manual requires it.

Confirm the pump is actually moving enough water

A variable-speed pump can be running while still operating below the flow required by a particular salt generator. Compare the current pump program with the generator's own documented flow requirement rather than assuming “pump on” automatically means “cell has enough flow.”

Check water level and skimmer draw

Low pool water can allow the skimmer to pull air, reducing the solid water supply reaching the pump and salt cell. Restore the normal operating level and make sure the skimmer is not being starved by a stuck weir or heavy debris.

Clean the baskets and filter if they are restricting flow

Pentair's troubleshooting specifically includes pump/skimmer basket debris and a dirty filter among low-flow causes. Service these components using their own procedures, then recheck the cell warning at the normal pump program.

Look for suction-side air and loss of prime

Air in the pump basket or return jets, repeated loss of prime, and low flow can be part of the same suction-side problem. Resolve the water-delivery issue before treating the salt cell as the failed component.

Inspect the cell only according to the model procedure

An obstruction or scale inside the cell can affect water flow or performance. Turn the system off and follow the generator's removal and inspection procedure. Do not acid-clean simply because the flow warning appeared.

Replace the flow switch or sensor only after the circulation path is verified

Flow switches and sensor modules are model-specific. A replacement should match the exact generator family, connector and installation orientation. If the system still reports low flow after normal circulation and the manufacturer diagnostic procedure is satisfied, then sensor replacement can become a real question.
