3. Total alkalinity: the pH buffer

PHTA describes total alkalinity as the bicarbonate/carbonate buffering capacity of the water, with a contribution from cyanurate in stabilized pools. In practical terms, alkalinity influences how resistant pH is to change. Very low alkalinity can allow pH to swing; excessive alkalinity can make rising pH harder to control in some pools.

4. Cyanuric acid: chlorine stabilizer

CYA protects chlorine from rapid ultraviolet loss in outdoor pools, but it also changes chlorine performance. This is why the chlorine number should not be interpreted without knowing whether stabilizer is present. CDC does not recommend CYA for hot tubs.

Test, change one thing, circulate, and retest. Never combine different pool chemicals in the same container, feeder, or concentrated form. Keep products dry and follow their labels.
