What cyanuric acid does
CYA binds with chlorine and reduces rapid ultraviolet loss in outdoor pools. That protection is useful, but it also slows chlorine's disinfection activity. This is why chlorine targets cannot be interpreted without knowing whether stabilizer is present.
How CYA gets too high
Stabilized chlorine products such as trichlor and dichlor add cyanuric acid as they add chlorine. Separate stabilizer products also add CYA. Because ordinary evaporation removes water but leaves dissolved CYA behind, repeated stabilized-product use can create a gradual upward trend.
Verify the test before correcting
CYA testing has its own method and resolution. Repeat an unexpected result with fresh reagent or another reliable test before making a major water-replacement decision.
Stop feeding the problem
If the CYA level is already above the operating range appropriate for the pool, stop adding unnecessary stabilizer and evaluate whether the current chlorine product is continuing to add CYA. Changing sanitizer method can stop further accumulation.
Why lowering CYA is different from lowering pH
CYA is not normally corrected with a simple household-style dose of another balancing chemical. When reduction is necessary, water replacement is a common practical approach because removing pool water removes some dissolved CYA with it.
Plan water replacement safely
The amount and method depend on the measured level, target, fill-water conditions, pool construction, groundwater, and local rules. Some pools can tolerate staged partial replacement better than a large drain. Do not expose a liner, plaster shell, or structure to a draining method it was not designed to handle.
Retest after correction
After replacement water has mixed, retest CYA and the rest of the water balance. Fresh water changes more than stabilizer, so chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and salt may also need reassessment.
