How Often Should You Shock a Pool? Not Necessarily Every Week

Do not add oxidizer simply to fix every water problem. Metal discoloration, scale, air leaks, filter damage, and pH/alkalinity problems require different solutions.

Know what product you are calling shock

Products sold as shock or oxidizer do not all contain the same chemistry or concentration. Never substitute a dose from one product for another. Read the active ingredient, concentration, pool-volume directions, application method, circulation instructions, and swimming restrictions on the actual label.

Cyanuric acid changes how chlorine readings are interpreted

CDC recommends a higher minimum chlorine concentration when cyanuric acid or stabilized chlorine products are used, and it notes that disinfection takes longer in the presence of cyanuric acid. A generic shock schedule that ignores stabilizer and current free chlorine is therefore missing important information.

Retest instead of assuming the treatment worked

After the label-directed circulation or waiting interval, test the water again before returning to the normal maintenance routine. The useful endpoint is restored, stable water chemistry and clarity, not simply the fact that a bag or bottle was added.
