Why Is My Pool Filter Pressure High?

Start with the filter's normal clean pressure, not an arbitrary PSI from another pool. If pressure has risen while return flow has weakened, the filter may be dirty. If pressure is high immediately after cleaning or startup, inspect the return side and pump setup. Jandy's current cartridge-filter troubleshooting guidance lists a dirty filter, a partially closed return valve, a small pool or spa eyeball fitting, and an oversized pump among causes of high pressure on startup.

Safety

A pool filter is a pressurized vessel. Shut the pump off, disconnect power where required, open the manual air-relief valve according to the filter instructions, and verify that pressure has returned to zero before opening the tank or clamp. Never loosen a filter clamp while the system is pressurized.

Know the clean-pressure baseline

The useful comparison is the pressure your own system shows when the filter is clean, the valves are in their normal positions, and the pump is running at its normal filtration speed. Filter size, plumbing, return fittings, pump speed, and water features make another pool's PSI a poor target.

A dirty filter is the first common check

Jandy lists a dirty filter as a cause of high pressure. If pressure has climbed from the clean baseline and flow has declined, service the installed filter type according to its manual. Cartridge, sand, and DE filters do not use the same cleaning procedure.

Check the return side for restrictions

A partially closed return valve or another restriction after the filter makes it harder for water to leave the system. Verify normal valve positions and look for a return-side change that happened around the same time the pressure rose.

Look at return fittings

Jandy also lists a small pool or spa eyeball fitting as a possible high-pressure cause. A restrictive return fitting can raise system pressure, particularly when paired with high pump flow.

Consider pump speed and sizing

Jandy lists an oversized pump as another high-pressure-on-startup cause. On a variable-speed system, an unnecessarily high RPM can create the same diagnostic question: is the system being asked to move more water than the filter and return path are intended to handle? Use the filter and pump manuals to establish compatible flow limits.

Do not solve high pressure by removing safety components

Do not operate without the required filter elements, bypass a pressure-related safety feature, or alter plumbing simply to make the gauge number fall. Diagnose why the system differs from its normal condition.

When a pressure gauge is worth checking

If the gauge does not return to zero with the pump off and the system fully depressurized, or if its reading does not make sense alongside actual flow and system behavior, compare it with the filter manufacturer's gauge requirements before replacing it. A new gauge is useful only if the existing gauge is actually unreliable.
