What Size Pool Pump Do I Need? Start With Flow, Not Horsepower

Do not choose a pump from pool gallons alone. Pool volume can help estimate a desired turnover flow, but real pump sizing also requires system resistance, plumbing size, filter limits, heater or sanitizer requirements, spa and water-feature demands, and the pump's performance curve.

Step 4: Keep the filter in the equation

Step 5: Give variable speed room to work

A correctly selected variable-speed pump can use a lower operating point for routine circulation and higher settings only when needed. The goal is a usable operating range, not the largest motor that fits the pad.

Bigger is not automatically better

Pentair's current pump information guide explicitly says pump size should be appropriate for the pool and that bigger is not always better. Excessive flow can create unnecessary noise, energy use, pressure, or compatibility problems. A variable-speed pump provides operating flexibility, but it still has to be an appropriate hydraulic and electrical match for the system.
